5 Simple Steps for Healthy, Glowing Skin All Day Long

We all want that beautiful, glowing complexion typical of healthy skin. And with a little discipline, we can get it.

Whether you are young or beautifully mature, your complexion is one of your most powerful assets. Makeup helps, but for true radiance, you need to give your skin some tender loving care. And most importantly, skin treatments don’t end with your face. You need to pay equal attention to the face, neck, and chest, as these are the most sensitive areas of the skin.

How I learned the importance of skincare

I’ve been using skincare products since I was 17. I have delicate, mixed skin that is prone to breakouts, and twenty years ago, the choice of products and the science behind them was quite different from today’s. It was sometimes difficult to find suitable products for my skin type, so I would test different brands and formulas to find the right one.

Over the years, my skin changed, developing new problems. Sun exposure and stress caused hyperpigmentation and melasma – harmless conditions where an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin colour, forms patchy deposits in the skin. It made me feel a bit sad and insecure, so I refused to go out without a foundation that offered perfect coverage.

Eventually, I decided to get rid of the hyperpigmentation and feel good again in my own skin. I visited Medved Višnjar Aesthetic Center where I was introduced to Laura Sardinšek (Msc Cosmetic Science & BSc Nursing). Laura helped me determine the right course of treatment and explained how I could prevent further discolouration from occurring.

I started with the chemical exfoliation treatment, which might sound harsher than mechanical exfoliation, but it’s actually gentler to the skin because it does not involve scrubbing. Laura also recommended some products to maintain healthy skin, prevent future damage, and at the same time, repair existing skin damage.

I wasn’t promised miracles nor did I expect any. I knew it would be a sort of journey. For me, any result that minimised my skin problems would be worth it.

After five treatments, my skin transformed in an amazing way. My skin tightened and pores shrank, giving my face a smooth texture. I was following all the recommendations and instructions that Laura gave me to maximise results. Now, my hyperpigmentation and melasma are barely visible, and fine wrinkles have reduced, too.

I plan to continue my treatment. New sun damage can reverse the results, so it is very important to protect the skin, and most importantly, to trust your skin to a professional that will do the treatments the right way, and will explain the results you can expect and the risks.

1. Cleanse

Cleansing is the most important part of skincare. It removes impurities, toxins, and prepares the skin for the other steps in your morning skincare routine.

I discovered the best cleanser I have ever tried on my flight with Singapore Airlines in their Krisshop. When I read that Eve Lom cleanser contains a unique blend of four aromatic oils with cleansing, decongesting, and soothing properties, I decided to give it a try – and now I don’t use anything else.

It comes with a woven muslin cloth you use with the cleanser to improve circulation and open pores. The cleanser is actually a 4 in 1 formula that moisturizes, cleanses, exfoliates, and tones the skin in minutes. And the added value you get with this cleanser is the Eve Lom 7-step massage – incorporate it into your nighttime cleansing routine and your skin will thank you for it.

2. Tone

Complete the cleansing with a facial toner customized to your skin type. I use HL – Labs Bio Repair Special Toner, with Hamamelis, natural repair complex, Bisabolol and Chamomile. It tones without being astringent, making it great for most skin types.

4. Protect your eyes

The skin under eyes is the thinnest and the most sensitive part of the face. Therefore, we need to use products that are specifically formulated for this area. My favorite eye cream of all time is Annemarie Börlind LL Regeneration eye wrinkle cream. The ingredient list is stellar and keeps my dry under-eyes supple and hydrated, without ever feeling tacky or irritating. It also protects and smoothes the eye area with high-quality plant-based oils.

5. Moisturize well

The most sensitive areas of the skin – the face, ears, neck, and chest – replace cells more often than any other area. Daily loss of skin cells leaves these areas vulnerable to dryness.

Moisturizing gives your skin the boost it needs to repair itself and stay healthy. Using the right kind of moisturizer for your type of skin helps maintain its balance. Since I have sensitive skin, I use HL – Labs Alpha Beta Day Defense Cream. This daily moisturizer contains retinol, otherwise known as Vitamin A, which increases the skin renewal process, diminishes wrinkles and fine lines, and improves skin elasticity and firmness. It also contains UVA and UVB sunscreen filters, and won’t cause any breakouts.

The only way to get your healthiest, brightest, and most glowing complexion is to keep damaging UV rays far away from your cells.  Although my moisturizer contains UVA and UVB protection, I still use La Roche-Posay Anthelios sunscreen on my face. Sunscreen may even help reverse aging.
